In 2015 the government introduced shared parental leave. Millennials now talk as much about men leaning in at home as women leaning in at work. But what is the reality? With UK childcare the most expensive in the world, can a child have two working parents, or will responsibilities always have to be split? We discuss how millennials are approaching parenting, for inspiration and ideas for parents and parents-to-be.
MEET THE PANEL:
Originally from New York, I’ve been living in Europe for the past 18 years (Belgium for eight, U.K. for the past 10). My career in research/insight has allowed me to travel and work globally. On the personal side, I’m a dad to six young children.

Sharon is the Director of Constructing Rainbows Ltd, a company she founded to improve diversity and inclusion within the built environment. She is a Chartered Quantity Surveyor with nearly 20 years experience working in the construction and facilities management industries, and sits on the board of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Yorkshire & Humber Region, and the Selby Educational Trust. Sharon, and her wife Helen, have two daughters aged 8 and 5.

Born and brought up in Crumpsall, North Manchester, left school at 16 with 1 GCSE in Drama, Joined the RAF at 19, was discharged in 1997 due to being gay as it was still illegal back then, Joined Greater Manchester Fire Service but left after 18 moths, set up a Promotions Company in 1999, won Mr Gay UK in 2001, set up a cleaning company in 2010, became a City Councillor in 2011, was Manchester’s youngest and first openly Gay Lord Mayor in 2016. After coming off the Council in 2018 – Appointed by The Mayor of Greater Manchester to be one of his special advisors. Received an Honouree Doctorate from University of Bolton for services to the community.
